A New Car

I spent the weekend looking for a new car. My last two cars have been Jaguars and with the demise of the S-Type, they've lost me. The XK is too little, the XJ is to old, and the XF is not a real Jag. What were they thinking getting rid of the hood jaguar on the XF? Nothing I've seen makes me weak at the knees and I grew up in a car crazed family-cars excite me. I'm leaning towards a BMW, but still on the fence. I love vintage cars. Today's cars just don't have the same style and elegance. Oh to drive a Porsche 911, an Aston Martin, a Karmann Ghia convertible in orange, a powder blue BMW 2002. What cars of today will become classics? It's hard to imagine except the Mini Cooper perhaps. Anyone driving something you just love? Do tell. I am in need of inspiration.

  1. Hmmmmm.....well, I love my Volvo suv, but I have it as I pile 12,342 kids aweek in it back and forth around town. When I am carpooless, I think the Cooper may be calling my name. It is snug, but oh so sweet and the mileage is amazing.

  4. I could not agree more. I always look at cars now to analyze if the the design will stand the test of time. The photos you chose are stellar examples. I am fondest of the Audi's at the moment, but I buckled & bought a Land Rover because it can transport many for my work & we loved how it drove. BMW's & Mercedes still visually hold up well in my book. Good luck Beth, car shopping is much like going to the dentist, but not as fun!!

  5. You have wonderful taste in cars (not that I'm surprised).

I've got an Acura and while it's not a classic, it's luxurious, dependable and a fun car to drive. I'm not particularly "into" cars (and, frankly, not much of a driver), so I tend to go for Japanese ones that are practically maintenance-free.

  7. I swear I rock a Honda mini van and have for years. I hit things with cars and I destroy the interiors. Nevertheless, everyone wants to roll with me. It's all about utility, emissions and safety for us. That said, I loved those old beautiful cars!

  13. The Continental GTC Bentley.

I've always wanted the Rolls in the movie, "The Yellow Rolls Royce."

I also wanted a Bugatti much like Isadora Duncan fluttered away in.

    Emma Peel's XKE.

I once owned a 1939 Plymouth that drove like a Sherman tank, but had it's own pizzazz...and a running board!

The white Citroen Traction Avant in the French film, "Diva."

A Bentley State Limousine like Queen Elizabeth rides around in. Staid? Yes. But it screams to traffic...politely, "Please remove yourself from my path of progression."

Get a tiny little Smart Car and paint it Schiaparelli Hot Pink. Meep Meep. Be seen in traffic swigging from a champagne magnum. Your booze is bigger than your car!

  16. I love the XKE but I think Emma drove an Elan by Lotus. My pick would be a Volvo if it is LOADED. Or try an older Lexus or Acura - let us know what you pick.

  19. Oh,a girl after my own heart. While I don't consider myself a snob about it, I simply love beautiful cars! Perhaps even more than I love shoes.

I am a huge fan of Jags from before Ford got their hands on them and started morphing them into Tauruses (Tauri?). Personally, I'm an Audi girl. The new A5 is gorgeous. I'm on my second A6 - I had a 2000 but it kept getting killed by bad Atlanta drivers, so in '05 I got an '05. I'd still be driving the '00 if it weren't for the accident. I think their lines stand up to time. They also do most colors better than everyone else.

I am also a huge fan of older BMW M3s from the '90s, Mercedes convertible coupes from the '80s and earlier, oh, and pretty much any BMW from the '80s, especially the larger ones.
