The Bird Cage

Bird cages are everywhere in decorating, but I must say that most are too shabby chic or country for my style. I have found some that are elegant and sophisticated. For those of you who follow my blog Chinoiserie Chic, they would be perfect for lovers of Chinoiserie as well. Any of these would be wonderful in a bedroom, sun room, screened porch, or breakfast room. These lovely bird cage mirrors with a red robin and parrot above and below are from one of my favorite stores Anthropologie. With their weathered iron cages and distressed mirror glass, they have a great antique look.

This Gold Bamboo Antiqued Bird Cage Mirror from the Mermaid Hut is so chic with its gold finish and little birds perched on it.

For a dramatic piece, I love this decorative aviary from Wisteria based on a 1930s French bird cage.

These beautifully crafted iron bird cages from the New York Botanical Garden are for birds or as beautiful decorative items. The double one is so unique. The single version has a beautiful Chinoiserie base. Both are on sale.

  1. Mermaid hut mirror is definitely my favorite. And I generally agree with you -- bird cages are a bit too shabby chic/country for my tastes, too. These though, I may make an exception for!

  2. Averill-You need to check out all of the Mermaid Hut Golden Bamboo line. They are gorgeous in person.

  3. Such a conundrum for me...love birdcages, but can't bear to put a bird in one. Being able to fly and not having the opportunity must be horrible. I've had two clients with giant birdcages. They are lovely...one has live birds (oh well), the other has a taxidermy peacock...which is a bit surreal.

  4. Jill-I would just use these as decoration. I agree.

  5. My mom always had a birdcage in the dining room of our house growing up. Never quite understood it -- and she has fantastic taste. Guess, I am the one who has it all wrong.

  6. I agree with Averill, the Mermaid Hut one is fab. I actually do like birdcages, but agree they've been a bit overexposed for a few years. These ones are great though. Not too precious...
