Mad Men Party

Tonight I am co-hosting a Mad Men cocktail party. We will be attired in our finest sixties outfits. Drinks will include champagne cocktails, Manhattans, and dry martinis. The menu is salmon mousse, deviled eggs, ham salad, chicken salad, shrimp cocktail, quiche, raw veggies and dip, and cupcakes. Sorry, no pigs in the blanket. Lots of Frank Sinatra. The only thing missing will be cigarettes. People knew how to have fun then, didn't they?

No series on the best fashion on television would be complete without including the wildly popular AMC series Mad Men. Its recreation of the 1960s, my favorite era in fashion, is nothing short of brilliant.

We hope you enjoyed our series this week on the A to Z of spring and summer trends. Next week will be great fun as we look at our favorite television shows for fashion. Mad Men is of course a given, but I think there will be some surprises. What's your favorite show for fashion? Reruns of Sex and the City perhaps? Do tell....

An Education

If you have not seen the movie An Education, catch it before it closes. This coming of age story set in 1960s suburban London, is a British Mad Men for its perfect styling of this era and its look at society in pre-swinging London. The clothes and cars are fabulous, as is this story of bright 16 year old Jenny headed hopefully to Oxford (played brilliantly by Carey Mulligan), and her whirlwind romance with an older playboy David (Peter Sarsgaard) twice her age. I want a Bristol car by the way. Like Betty Draper learns of Don, David is more complicated than he seems. Witty and elegant, this is a lovely film.

Mad Men Fashion File

Last night's episode of Mad Men, although a sobering one with the Kennedy assassination and the implosion of the Draper's marriage, was nevertheless visually stunning. Betty Draper's ensemble at the wedding of Margaret Sterling was wonderful-an ice blue brocade suit with white mink collar. I hope you caught the matching white mink capelet and ice blue shoes and handbag as well. And speaking of stunning, I adored Margaret Sterling's wedding gown and especially her headpiece of feathers, pearls, and silk illusion. These would be perfect ideas to borrow for a fall or winter wedding. Betty's outfit would be ideal for the mother of the bride. Margaret's headpiece was so elegant-straight out of Swan Lake. Don't forget your pearl necklace and pearl drop earrings!
