Very Chic Idea

This is a dressing room at the Lilly Pulitzer store in Palm Beach Gardens in Florida. Isn't this a great idea to borrow? Just paint the walls pink and tell your own story using paint markers in black and gold. A perfect idea for a powder room, dressing room, girl's bedroom, or a big girl's bedroom!

Fun and Fabulous Dressing Room DIY

Here are two whimsical and wonderful ideas for decorating the dressing room. Both are budget minded DIY that will give your dressing room an ultra feminine and ultra glamorous panache. First, find a wire or steel mannequin form and tie bows all over it to create a skirt. How French and fun is this? Second, I bet you, like me, have saved beautiful shopping bags too pretty to throw away-frame some in cheap frames for an incredible wall display.

Pink is such a natural choice in a room as unabashedly feminine as a dressing room. Your use of pink may be subtle like featuring pink pieces in your wardrobe as in Mariah Carey's dressing room above. Below are other ways to incorporate it. How would you use pink?

Nudes and Dressing Rooms

I find something especially compelling about the use of a nude in a dressing room. It has such a boudoir feel, as though she is waiting to be dressed. Here is a great example in this Jonathan Adler dressing room above and Canadian House & Home below. The last picture is in my own dressing room. Note too the other wonderful elements in the room above-the crystal chandelier, leopard, Lucite, a mirrored chest, an oversized ottoman-you see these featured again and again in really well done dressing rooms.

Domino Magazine Dressing Rooms and Closets

Domino Magazine was a great source of inspiration to me in creating my own dressing room. So here are some great photos from Domino with tips to fuel your imagination.

1. Crystal chandelier, mirrored furniture, fresh flowers.

My Dressing Room

Staying home this Labor Day weekend? This would be a great weekend project. I took an unused small bedroom in my home and with paint and Elfa shelving from the Container Store, created this safe haven for all my accessories. Have a lovely weekend, whatever you do.

The French Dressing Room

Isn't this wonderful? As you all have figured out, I love pink and black, bows, very feminine, and with a French feel. This has it all in spades. This image is from one of my favorite blogs and bloggers, Sande from A Gift Wrapped Life via Paris Atelier. Sande's blog is on the art of giving and it is a visual feast. I saved it because I thought it would be such a fun DIY. These metal forms are widely available from tabletop to large. Just pick a color and lots of ribbon, tie bows all over and voila. I am going to do one of these for my very girly pink dressing room. It would also be wonderful in a girl's bedroom. Pink, black, a combination of pink and black, turquoise blue, any of these colors would be gorgeous!

The Pink Dressing Room-High/Low

Habitually Chic, one of my favorite interior design blogs, just featured the amazing Manhattan townhouse of Julie and Luke Janklow currently listed at $25 million. Literary agent Luke Janklow and his wife Julie, founder of restaurant Sweetiepie in the West Village are splitting up. The top picture below is of her dressing room fashioned in perspex and glass with pink silk carpeting inspired by Joan Crawford's dressing room in the movie Mommie Dearest. The bottom picture is my dressing room inspired by my wish that my hats, shoes, gloves, and handbags no longer be squished. I took a spare bedroom, pink paint, Container Store elfa shelving, a recycled dresser from my daughter's nursery and created my dressing room for about $1000. The pink paint I had colored matched to a shopping bag from Thomas Pink. It's Pink's pink :) While researching for this post, I came across a great quote by Julie Janklow about her mostly self designed townhouse. "I can't imagine somebody decorating my house. It would be like someone dressing me every morning, telling me what to wear." Especially if, like Julie, you have taste and style. If you don't, in the words of Joe Biden, "God love ya."
